Bluecoat Wollaton Academy – Two Form Academy Expansion Consultation
In line with requirements of the significant change guidance, where consultation also requires variation to admission arrangements after they have been determined, we are consulting for 4 weeks. Therefore our consultation is running from Monday 5th February until Monday 4th March 2024. Please note the consultation will close at 9am on Monday, 4th March 2024.
A need for a additional secondary school places in Nottingham City has been identified by Nottingham City Council and the Department of Education.
Bluecoat Wollaton Academy, which is part of Archway Learning Trust, has been approached by the Local Authority to expand our academy by 60 pupils per year from September 2024. This is a temporary arrangement for 2024, and we are consulting on making this a permanent increase from September 2025.
Who are Archway Learning Trust?
Archway Learning Trust was formed in April 2014 and built upon the very long and successful history of Bluecoat Academy which began in 1706. Our family of ten schools educates over 9500 children every day across Nottingham and Derby.
What is Two Form Expansion?
The two form expansion is an increase of 60 students per year. This will be a phased expansion which will be achieved over five years, with a temporary increase from September 2024 and the permanent increase from 2025.
The increase in the Planned Admission Number (PAN) will increase the reserved number of places within the over subscription criteria set out in the proposed Admission Arrangements 2025/26 that forms part of this consultation.
Please note the consultation is for the permanent increase, there is no requirement to consult on the temporary increase from this September.
This increase in students is spread across our various categories of admissions. Should the proposal to increase in planned admission numbers progress, the current determined admission arrangements would need to change to reflect this increase, to ensure we are meeting the scope of the Schools Admissions Code 2021 and that places are allocated fairly and transparently.
It is proposed that the current number of reserved places are increased in a pro rata basis. The proposed admission arrangements can be found here : BWA Proposed Variation To Admission Arrangements 2025 26
Please note the supplementary form would remain the same as the determined version, meaning that applications already received can and will be ranked in accordance with the proposed Admission Criteria as none of the criteria has changed, only the reserved numbers within each criteria.
Why Expand Bluecoat Wollaton?
Nottingham City has seen a significant increase in demand for primary places in recent years and this increase is now starting to move into secondary schools, with the greatest demand of secondary school places being in the North, Central and West of the city. Archway Learning Trust has a long and successful relationship supporting pupil growth across the city, with most recent opening of Bluecoat Trent Academy in September 2020.
To support continued growth and as an Outstanding Academy we believe Bluecoat Wollaton is well placed to expand our educational provision and support the demand for places across the city. Bluecoat Wollaton is geographically well placed for the projected growth in pupil numbers.
What about buildings?
To support a the successful expansion of the Academy, Archway Learning Trust is working closely with Nottingham City Council to review our buildings and estate. In the first two years of expansion temporary accommodation will support learning, with work being completed to ascertain permanent building needs.
