City of Sanctuary holds the vision that our nations will be welcoming places of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.
In 2019, Bluecoat Aspley Academy became the first ‘School of Sanctuary’ in Nottingham. In November 2021, Bluecoat Beechdale Academy passed the assessment and gained recognition for being a School of Sanctuary as well.
We’re proud to announce that Bluecoat Wollaton Academy has joined our other academies in becoming a School of Sanctuary!
The awarding body, City of Sanctuary, said: “We were all very moved by the supportive and calm atmosphere of the school and by the enthusiasm and positivity of the delightful pupils we met. This is a school which obviously works solidly together to provide a safe, welcoming and supportive space for all its pupils and staff and is particularly successful in creating a multi-cultural and inclusive community. The school has aspirations and detailed plans on ways to develop and expand on this in the future.”
Bluecoat Wollaton Academy celebrated the award with a Culture Day. Students and staff came to school in their own cultural dress and enjoyed an hour off-timetable to have a go playing traditional West African drums and participate in some dancing!
