Governance

Governance

Archway Learning Trust is an educational charity regulated by the Secretary of State for Education and governed by its Articles of Association and Master funding Agreements which can be found here.

There are three clear layers of governance at Archway:

Members
Trustees
Local Academy Advisory Boards

Our Members
Our Members play an important role in overseeing the work of our Trustees and our financial security. To find out more about our Members click here.

Our Trustees
Our Trustees are another key layer involved in our governance. They are accountable for all aspects of our work, including the performance of every one of our academies. To find out more about our trustees click here.

As well as monitoring our performance, the main job of Trustees is to provide strategic leadership by setting our vision and values and by ensuring we engage strategically with a wide range of partners and stakeholders including the Executive Leadership Team.

Trustees have established a number of Committees to monitor and oversee different aspects of our work. These Committees are chaired by and consist of trustees who, through their own work experience, can provide an expert lens on specific areas allowing the trusts corporate governance to make informed decision. How they do this is detailed in our Governance and Scheme of Delegation document: Governance & Scheme Of Delegation 2025

Trustees also oversee the work of Archways own school based teacher training programme (SCITT). You can find out more information here.

Our Trustees are also supported in their work by two key groups of people:

Local Academy Advisory Boards
Those involved in our local governance provide a strategic lens on local academy performance, offer challenge and support to the academy and ultimately provide assurance to the board. More information can be found here.

Internal & External Auditors, Central Governance Team
As well as external auditors the Academy Trust Handbook (2025) states explicitly that trusts with an annual revenue of over £50m internal scrutiny must be delivered by a professional internal audit function, either in-house or bought in.

The Central Governance Team provide Quality Assurance across all  layers of the trusts governance making available clerking, guidance and resources to ensure compliance and effectiveness. Within this team the Chief Corporate Services Officer fulfils the function of Principal Governance Professional and Company Secretary.

In practice our Trustees, who are volunteers, delegate almost all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the Trust to the Chief Executive Officer and the Executive Leadership Team and the day-to-day leadership of each academy is delegated, of course, to the Principal.
